An engagement invitation message tells guests four things: whose engagement it is, what kind of event it is (a party, a dinner or a ring ceremony), who is hosting, and when and where to come. Add a reply-by date and keep the rest short. The happy news does most of the work.

Below are copy-ready engagement invitation messages for formal and casual parties, ring ceremonies, family and friends, plus short lines for the card and the WhatsApp message that carries the invitation. They work on a printed card or in digital engagement invitations. The examples use an engagement party on Saturday, March 13, 2027, for Leila Haddad and Marcus Bell, and a ring ceremony on Sunday, March 14, 2027, for Ananya and Rohan. Swap in your own details.

Formal engagement party wording

Formal wording usually comes from the parents. Their names lead, and the couple is named in full.

For many South Asian families, the engagement is a ceremony with its own rituals, followed by a meal, and the families are the hosts. These lines name both families and give the ceremony time and the meal time separately.

When the engagement is announced at the party

  • Please join us for a family dinner. We have news to share.

Send each guest their own engagement invitation

Link Invitation gives each guest their own engagement invitation link, with their name on it. You send each guest their link on WhatsApp, one tap per guest, with your own message, and the preview card shows the guest's name. Each design has a story timeline for how you met and the proposal, plus the date, a map and a reply button, and replies arrive on one dashboard with guest counts. When it's time for the wedding, your guest list carries over to the wedding invitation. If you also want to send a save the date for the wedding later, it is a separate, shorter page.

Essential is US$29 and you build it yourself, free to build and preview before you pay. Excellence is US$99 and is designed for you. Both are a one-time payment per invitation, with unlimited guests and no subscription. See plans and pricing.

Frequently asked questions

Who hosts an engagement party?

Traditionally, the bride's parents host. Today the groom's parents, both families together, friends, other relatives or the couple themselves can host, and the invitation follows whoever is paying and inviting. Parents use formal wording with their names first. A couple hosting their own party writes in the first person: "We're engaged, and we'd love to celebrate with you."

Should everyone at the engagement party be invited to the wedding?

Yes, as a rule of thumb. Inviting someone to celebrate the engagement suggests they will be invited to the wedding, so keep the engagement list inside the wedding list. If the wedding will be very small, a family-only engagement dinner avoids awkward questions later. Agree on both guest lists with the families before any invitation goes out.

Can you mention gifts on an engagement invitation?

It's best not to ask for gifts on the invitation itself, and guests are not expected to bring one. Some will anyway, so set up a registry or wedding website for those who ask, and let family pass on the link. If you'd rather nobody brought anything, a short line such as "Your presence is the only gift we need" says so kindly.

How do you invite people when the engagement is a surprise announcement?

Invite them to something neutral, such as a dinner, a family lunch or "a celebration," and give the date, time and place as usual. Don't hint at the news in the invitation or the message that carries it. Tell one or two close people in advance, so someone is ready to start the toast when you share it.
