Here are save the date messages written for the way you'll actually send them: short texts and WhatsApp messages, full emails with subject lines, and versions for destination weddings, long engagements and smaller celebrations. Copy one, add your names and date, and send.

Where you see [Link], that's the spot for a digital save the date or your wedding website. If you don't have one yet, the "without a link" set further down is written to stand on its own.

Frequently asked questions

Is it okay to send a save the date by text message?

Yes, especially for guests you already text regularly. Keep it to the essentials: your names, the date, the place, and a line saying the invitation will follow. For older relatives or formal guests, you might pair the text with a phone call or a printed card. What matters is that the date reaches them clearly and early.

Should the save the date email include the venue?

Name the city at least, because that's what guests need to judge travel. The exact venue can wait until the invitation, which is useful if it isn't booked yet. For a destination wedding, include the country or region and a note that travel details will follow, so guests can start watching flights and leave.

Can we send save the dates to guests we haven't confirmed for the guest list?

It's best not to. A save the date tells someone an invitation is coming, so anyone who receives one will expect the invitation too. If you're still deciding on a guest, wait. You can send that guest the full invitation later, without a save the date first, and it won't seem out of place.

Should a save the date say "adults only"?

You can, and it's kind to do it early if guests will need to arrange childcare or travel. A short line works: "Please note our celebration will be adults only." If you'd rather keep the save the date simple, put it clearly on the invitation instead, and address the invitation only to the people invited.
