These are wedding thank you messages you can copy into a card or send as a message: notes for cash gifts, registry gifts, handmade and experience gifts, guests who traveled, guests who couldn't come, your wedding party, your parents and your vendors. Each one is written to be changed a little, so it sounds like you and fits the person reading it.

What to write in a wedding thank you card

A good thank-you note does three things, in about three sentences:

  • Names the gift. "Thank you for the cast iron pan" beats "thank you for the gift."
  • Says how you'll use it, or what it meant. This is the line that makes it personal.
  • Mentions the person, not just the present. Their being there, their speech, their dancing, or the fact that they were missed.

Sign it from both of you, and if one of you writes the card, the other can add a line in their own hand.

Thank you card wording for money and checks

With money, you don't need to name the amount. Say what it's going toward, so the giver can picture it.

  • Dear Aunt Linda, thank you so much for your generous gift. We're putting it toward our first sofa, so you'll be the first person we invite to sit on it. It meant a lot to have you with us on the day.

  • Dear Mark and Julie, thank you for your kind gift. It's going straight into our honeymoon fund, and we'll be raising a glass to you in Lisbon. Thank you for celebrating with us.

  • Dear Grandpa, your gift made us both a little teary. We're saving it for the deposit on our first home, and we'll think of you every time we open the front door.

  • Dear [Name], thank you for your generosity. We've started a savings account for our first big trip together, and your gift got it off to a wonderful start. We loved seeing you on the dance floor.

  • Dear [Name], thank you for the check and the lovely card that came with it. We're using it to frame our wedding photos, so a little of your kindness will hang on our wall.

Registry gift thank you messages

The registry tells you what they gave, so be specific and add a detail about using it.

  • Dear Sam and Priya, thank you for the stand mixer! We've already made our first loaf of bread with it, which was a little flat, but we're learning. Thank you for being with us on the day.

  • Dear [Name], thank you for the beautiful towels. They're exactly what we hoped for, and they've made our bathroom feel brand new. It was so good to see you at the wedding.

  • Dear Ellen, we love the dinner plates. We hosted our first dinner party on them last weekend, and everyone asked where they came from. Thank you for celebrating with us.

  • Dear [Name], thank you for the espresso machine. Mornings in our house have never been better. We're so glad you could be part of our day.

Thank you messages for handmade gifts

A handmade gift took hours. Acknowledge the time and the skill.

  • Dear Aunt Rosa, the quilt is stunning. We know how many evenings went into it, and it's now the first thing anyone sees in our bedroom. Thank you for making something we'll keep forever.

  • Dear [Name], thank you for the hand-painted portrait of our venue. It caught the light of that afternoon perfectly. It's hanging in our hallway, and we smile every time we walk past.

  • Dear Ben, the cutting board you made is beautiful, and we can't bring ourselves to cut on it yet. Thank you for the time and care you put into it.

Thank you messages for experience gifts

For gifts like a dinner, a class or a stay. If you haven't used it yet, say when you plan to.

  • Dear [Name], thank you for the cooking class! We've booked it for next month and we're already arguing about who gets to hold the knife. Thank you for such a thoughtful gift.

  • Dear Tom and Grace, thank you for the night at the coast. We went last weekend and it was exactly the rest we needed after the wedding. We'll send you a photo of the sunset.

  • Dear [Name], thank you for the concert tickets. We can't wait. It'll be our first night out as a married couple, and we have you to thank.

For guests who traveled to the wedding

Thank them for the journey as well as the gift.

  • Dear Michael and Anna, thank you for flying all the way from Seattle to be with us. Seeing you in the second row meant more than we can say. And thank you for the lovely glasses.

  • Dear [Name], we know the trip took two flights and a long drive, and we're so grateful you made it. Having you there made the day complete. Thank you also for your generous gift.

  • Dear Cousin Jo, thank you for making the trip. It wouldn't have been the same without you on the dance floor at midnight. We're already planning a visit to you next year.

  • Dear [Name], thank you for coming all this way. We know weddings that need a flight are a real commitment of time and money, and it meant a great deal that you chose to spend them on us.

Thank you wording for guests who didn't attend

Thank them for the gift and the thought, and let them know they were missed, without making them feel guilty.

  • Dear [Name], thank you for the lovely gift and the card. We missed you on the day, and we'd love to catch up soon and show you the photos.

  • Dear Aunt Mary, we were so sorry you couldn't make it, and so touched that you thought of us anyway. Thank you for the beautiful vase. It's on our table right now with flowers from the wedding.

  • Dear [Name], thank you for your kind gift. We thought of you on the day and raised a glass in your honor. We hope to see you soon.

  • Dear [Name], thank you for your warm wishes and your generous gift. We know the timing didn't work out, and we completely understand. Let's find a weekend to celebrate together.

Thank you messages for the wedding party

Your wedding party gave time, money and nerves. Be specific about what they did.

  • Dear Kate, thank you for being my maid of honor. You kept me calm, kept the schedule on track, and gave a speech that had everyone in tears. I couldn't have done it without you.

  • Dear Josh, thank you for standing beside me. From the bachelor weekend to the rings, you handled everything. Best man in every sense.

  • Dear [Name], thank you for being one of our bridesmaids. You fixed my hem, found my shoes, and made me laugh when I needed it most. Love you.

  • Dear [Name], thank you for officiating our wedding. You made the ceremony feel like us, and so many guests told us it was their favorite part.

Thank you messages for parents

A note to your parents can say what the day couldn't.

  • Dear Mom and Dad, thank you for everything you did to make our wedding happen, and for everything before that which made us who we are. We felt your love every minute of the day.

  • Dear [Name] and [Name], thank you for welcoming me into your family. Your support through the planning, and your toast at the reception, meant the world to us both.

  • Dear Mom, thank you for the late-night calls, the venue visits and the tears at the right moments. This day was as much yours as ours.

  • Dear Dad, thank you for walking me down the aisle. I'll remember the look on your face for the rest of my life.

Thank you messages for vendors

A thank-you to a vendor can be short. If you'd recommend them, say so, and follow through with a review.

  • Hi [Name], thank you for the beautiful flowers. Guests couldn't stop talking about the centerpieces, and we kept one bouquet to dry. We'll happily recommend you to anyone who asks.

  • Dear [Name], thank you for capturing our day so beautifully. We've looked through the photos more times than we can count. We'll leave you a review this week.

  • Hi [Name], thank you for running the day so smoothly. We didn't have to think about a single thing, which was exactly what we hoped for.

  • Dear [Name], thank you for the incredible food. Our guests are still talking about the short ribs. Thank you for making the reception so special.

Short thank you messages to send by text or WhatsApp

For a quick thanks the day after, before the handwritten cards go out. These are a first thank-you, not a replacement for one.

  • Thank you so much for coming yesterday, [Name]! It meant the world to have you there. Card to follow.

  • We're still smiling from yesterday. Thank you for celebrating with us, [Name], and for that dance-off.

  • [Name], thank you for the lovely gift and for making the trip. We'll be in touch properly once we're back from the honeymoon.

  • Hi [Name], we just opened your gift. Thank you! A proper card is on its way, but we couldn't wait to say it.

  • Thank you for being part of our day, [Name]. Photos coming soon!

Message first, card later: deciding who gets which

Not every thank-you has to be a card, and not every card has to wait for the honeymoon to end. One way to plan it:

WhoQuick message within a few daysHandwritten card
Parents and close familyYesYes
Wedding partyYesYes, with a specific memory
Guests who gave a giftOptionalYes
Guests who traveledYes, to thank them for the tripYes
Guests who sent a gift but didn't attendOptionalYes
Guests who attended without a giftOptionalA short card or message is a kind touch
VendorsYesOptional, a public review means a lot

The quick message can go out on WhatsApp or by text the week after. The handwritten cards follow over the next few weeks, which gives you time to say something specific instead of something fast.

To keep track, start from your guest list. Add two columns, "gift" and "thank-you sent," and fill them in as you open presents. A list sorted by family and friend groups makes it easier to write a batch for one side at a time.

If you sent your invitation with Link Invitation, the list you need for thank-you notes is already there. Every guest is in your guest list, tagged by side and group, and your RSVP dashboard still shows who replied for which event and any short note a guest left with their reply. Export the list to CSV, add your gift and thank-you columns, and you have your checklist.

Still planning, and reading ahead? Link Invitation gives each guest a personal invitation link with their name on it, a live RSVP dashboard, and a guest list you can export when the day is done. Essential is US$29, free to build and preview before you pay, and Excellence is US$99. Each is a one-time payment per invitation with unlimited guests. See what's included.

Frequently asked questions

How long after the wedding should thank you cards go out?

Aim to send them within a few months of the wedding, and sooner for gifts that arrived before the day. If you're running late, send them anyway: a heartfelt card at six months is better than none. A quick thank-you message in the first week buys you time to write the cards properly.

Do we need to mention the amount when thanking someone for money?

No. Naming the amount can feel awkward for both sides. Thank them for their generosity and say what the money will help with, such as a honeymoon, a home or a piece of furniture. That tells the giver their gift made a difference without turning the note into a receipt.

Is a thank you message on WhatsApp enough, or do we still need a card?

A message is a lovely first thank-you, and for some vendors and casual friends it may be all that's expected. For gifts, and for anyone who traveled or helped, a card is the safer choice. It doesn't have to be long. Three warm, specific sentences in your handwriting carry more than a long message typed in a hurry.

What do we write if we don't know who a gift came from?

First try to find out: check the registry record, ask a parent or sibling, or look for a card that came loose. If it's still a mystery, note the gift on your list and wait: the giver may mention it, and you can thank them then. Avoid guessing a name and thanking the wrong person.
